Sciath na Scol
Cloghroe N.S. began its involvement with Sciath na Scol in the early 1980s. Though Sciath na Scol has been in operation since 1903 its activities would have been concentrated primarily in city schools. In the intervening years, an increasing number of schools in the suburbs and satellite towns and also rural schools became involved.
Initially when Cloghroe first participated it would have been in Boys’ Hurling and Football competitions. We would have had quite a level of success, gradually progressing upwards through the various grades and even competing at Roinn A level for a few years.
School leagues and in-school competitions, for many years played in Ballyanly (as we didn’t have our own school fields until the 1990s), were the foundation blocks for our school teams. Progressively over the years our involvement has been incremental and all encompassing, with Camogie and Girls’ Football now on an equal footing. As participation and inclusivity are the primary aims, we are now involved in an extensive and varied programme of Sciath activities, including IV and V Class Hurling Blitzes, INTO Mini Sevens competitions, Indoor Camogie and Hurling, etc.
The last 30 years plus have seen our pupils, teachers/coaches and parents traversing east and west north and south from Millstreet to Youghal and from Clonakilty to Mallow. It has been a pleasure to see some of our pupils perform with Cork under age teams at the half-time programmes in Championship Semi-finals and Finals in Croke Park, Semple Stadium and elsewhere. Representing the school this year were Amy Corkery, Conor O'Leary (Football), Ellen Murphy (Camogie) and Fergal O'Leary (Hurling), with the latter two lucky enough to represent their county in Thurles.
We have had great days (and a few disappointing days also) in Páirc Uí Chaoimh, Páirc Uí Rinn and Neptune. The warm welcome back to Cloghroe, whether victorious or vanquished, has been memorable and the “party”, organised for the teams and busloads of supporters by the Parents’Association, has been a fitting tribute and finale.
The ongoing training and coaching, supplemented in recent years by Inniscarra GAA, and the in-house competitions, with emphasis on participation, teamwork and fair play, augurs well for the future.
