Quiz Teams
Cloghroe School has always had a great interest in and mastery of quizzes, down through the years. Our quiz teams have won prizes that included T.V.s, videos recorders, saving certs from the Credit Union, trophies and medals.
Our former Principal, Mr Paddy O’Connell was a great advocate of quizzes and together with our present Deputy Principal Mary McSwiney, steered several quiz teams, up to 2012, to success. These included Credit Union Quiz Teams, sometimes both junior and senior teams to the All Ireland, in the R.D.S Dublin, Pioneer Association Quizzes, Clogheen/Kerrypike Parents Association and the National Parents Association Quiz which was sponsored by Cadbury’s.
Winning the Cadbury’s Schools All Ireland Quiz in 1999 was one of the highlights of Cloghroe’s quiz record. The prize was a trip to Birmingham to visit the Cadburys Factory. Much to the amusement of the children, this trip also included a chauffeur driven limousine for the entire weekend.
In recent years, Mrs Dineen Principal, teachers Mrs Noreen O’Connor, Mrs Rose O’Connor and Mrs Fiona McSweeney have continued Cloghroe’s successes on the quiz circuit with wins in the Clogheen Parents Association Quiz and the Sciath Na Scol Sports Quiz. Winning the sports quiz eluded the school several times. This year, 2014, brought the much coveted win at last! Children also part in the Scór na bPáistí quiz for the first time in 2013-14.
Going forward, the schools skills in quizzes is in very capable hands. This together with many talented pupils ensures quizzes will remain an integral part of our school life. Having a broad range of general knowledge, an interest in current affairs and in the world around them, is something we believe in, as a school, will enrich our pupils future as well as deserving members of our quiz teams, wherever they may be!
