Our School
On a hillside overlooking the green hills of Cloghroe, in the picturesque parish of Inniscarra, stands St Senan’s Primary School, a modern well-equipped school, catering for 560 boys and girls. Located approximately 10 kilometres on the western side of Cork City, adjacent to Cloghroe Church and bordering Muskerry Golf Club, this school combines history and modernity in equal measure. “Cloghroe” translates as Cloch Rua (Red Sandstone) in Irish-a type of sandstone found mainly north of the River Lee. The connection with St Senan dates back to his arrival in Inniscarra where he is reputed to have founded a monastery. The crest of our school jumper symbolises this monastic ruin.
The original school at Cloghroe was situated less than a kilometre west of the current school. When the school moved to its’ present site in 1968 there were five teachers and five classrooms. Three extensions were added over the years in 1974, 2002 and 2008 to cater for a growing community. The present school has facilities which are second to none. Each classroom is equipped with interactive whiteboards, teacher laptops and class desktops. We have a fully-equipped computer room and well-stocked library. Pride of place goes to our large hall (Halla Uí Chonaill), which facilitates a variety of physical education, sporting and musical activities for both the school and the community.
Complementing our indoor facilities are an astro-turf pitch, a fine playing field and our school garden. Two pieces of sculpture adorn the grounds. One is the image of crows pecking breadcrumbs, cast in bronze on the school yard; by sculptor and past pupil Don Cronin .More recently the heliotrope represents the opening out of children’s minds to the sun. Lending colour to the area are the beautiful representations of Irish legends, painted by past pupil and artist David Kavanagh, as well as a variety of playground games.
At this moment Cloghroe has thirty teachers, including Classroom, Learning Support and Resource teachers as well as an Administrative Principal. We have eleven Special Needs Assistants, a full-time Secretary and Caretaker.
The Board of Management manages the school on behalf of the patron, the Catholic Church. The school also gives due recognition to all other religions and welcomes parents and children of all faiths and none to the school.
The Parents’Association support the school in all its activities. The support and goodwill forthcoming from the parent body, allied with the hard work and dedication of the staff, combine to ensure our children have a school, they can be justly proud of.
