History
Cloghroe N.S. opened its doors at its present location in September 1968. There were 5 teachers on the staff and the 5 classrooms were located in the present Blocks A and B. There were two small playgrounds, one in front of each Block.
In the early 1970s, the first extension was built. This provided a further 3 classrooms, a small Hall and some small rooms (Block C). As the Cloghroe and Tower areas continued to develop, there was a consequent increase in the number of pupils seeking admission to our school. The small Hall very quickly became a classroom and within a year or two it was divided into two classrooms. By 1980 the staff had increased to 12 teachers and every available space was a classroom!
The early 1980s saw the first prefab arrive on the site as numbers continued to increase. Further prefabs followed pretty quickly during the 80s. These were located in the front of the school (where the 2008 Extension now is). It seemed that a further extension was warranted and in 1990 the first steps were taken to bring this about. However, like a lot of other school developments, progress was slow. Eventually, the second Extension was opened in 1998. This consisted of a further 3 classrooms and some special education rooms, the current Block D. This extension was intended to replace the prefabs but due to the slow progress from initial application to completion this did not happen. A further surge in housing development in Tower again put pressure on school accommodation and it was ironic that on the date of the opening of the 1998 Extension by The Minister for Education and Science, the Principal stated that an application for a fourth extension had been submitted to the Department!
During the 1990s some additional play areas were created and the space at the back of the school was levelled off to create some playing fields. This provided greater opportunities for our pupils, but again some prefabs had to be added in the lower field. During the early to mid 2000s the entire focus was concentrated on securing the fourth Extension. It was evident that this was a major undertaking, which if successful would provide the very best of facilities for present and future pupils. At long last in 2006 work commenced on this project. It was completed in 2008 and provided 8 classrooms, Hall, Library, special education rooms, Staffroom and Offices. At the same time other works were also undertaken to again enhance school facilities. The large playing field was extended and regrassed, an Astroturf pitch was laid out and a Computer Room. The fourth Extension, which is greater in area than the remainder of the school, was officially opened in June 2009.
