Pizza party!
1st class pupils took full advantage of our wonderful cooking facilities, in our school kitchen. Pupils had been studying instructional writing for a number of weeks and decided to focus on recipe writing. Having found the perfect pitta pizza recipe, the boys and girls in 1st class spent a morning experimenting in the kitchen. Pupils used very adventurous toppings such as pepperoni, salami, pesto and a wide variety of vegetables. After cooking the pizzas and working together to tidy up the kitchen, pupils engaged in a “pizza party”! The children thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to develop their culinary skills.

Aistear—A learning journey in Junior Infants
“For a small child there is no division between playing and learning; between the things he or she does ‘just for fun’ and things that are ‘educational’. Aistear, the Irish word for a journey, is the name of the early childhood curriculum framework, a new structured play programme that the junior infant classes have embarked upon since October. By using Aistear alongside the Primary School Curriculum, we focus on helping children to develop to their full potential and to lay good foundations for later learning. Play offers valuable and enjoyable real life contexts for young children to develop literacy and numeracy skills.

Green Schools
The green schools committee and teachers in Cloghroe N.S. are very busy working towards our 4th Green Flag. The flag is based on travel. Our committee met with our travel education officer, Jane Kelleher to carry out a walkability audit in November 2013. In January 2014, the school held an information meeting for parents. Both pupils and staff are looking forward to participating in our first W.O.W. day (Walk on Wednesday) in the coming months.
