Digital Skills Gold Badge Award
Congratulations to Mrs. Golden and the boys and girls in Fifth Class who were awarded a Gold Badge at the Digital Skills Event after participating in the All Aboard initiative.
All Aboard 2017
All Aboard was a national initiative to build confidence in digital skills for learning. It took place during the week of April 3rd – 7th 2017 and it was run by the National Forum for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education.
Cloghroe NS’s All Aboard 2017 Initiative:
This initiative involved four mixed gender, mainstream 5th class children. To enhance their digital and communication skills, children interviewed the main characters and teacher involved in our large biennial school musical production to produce a radio interview.
Firstly, a Padlet blog was set up by the four children and the full year group (total = 62 children) were invited to contribute questions they had about the musical preparation and practices to the blog. This engaged the full cohort of children in digital literacy – framing and posing appropriate and interesting questions, reflecting on the types of questions commonly used in interviews, opening the blog independently, typing the question, saving the information etc. There was a great sense of satisfaction from children whose question was used on the radio!
Secondly the four children then used the software application, Audacity to record their own questions and interviewees answers to create the dialogue for the program.
Building Confidence in Digital Skills for Learning
This initiative involved setting up a ‘studio’, placing microphones, sound checks etc. Children then edited their work to ensure a professional sound and flow! They learned skills such as cutting out blank air time, researching and finding appropriate sound files in certain formats like .wav files, inserting those sound files in appropriate places in the program. They also learned skills such as fading in and fading out songs at the introduction and conclusion and merging tracks. It heightened their interest in digital literacy and they became more aware of radio genres and the formats used on different stations.
Children were amazed at how the editing process enhanced the overall sound of the program and thoroughly enjoyed this interactive process. They also really enjoyed finding appropriate sound files for use on the radio, and websites such as sound bible (www.soundbible.com) were a great hit!
This All Aboard project is the second such programme undertaken this year in fifth class. The previous one used Audacity too but the focus was on promoting Internet Safety Full details are available on http://www.cloghroens.com/internet-safety-2017.html and www.saferinternetday.ie and https://www.betterinternetforkids.eu/web/portal/practice/awareness/detail?articleId=1581502
The aim was to provide widespread practice of digital skills through project work throughout the year.
This radio interview was podcasted to the School Website so that the wider community of parents could gain some insight into the musical preparation in the school.
