Comenius Visit to Manchester
Miss Leonard and Mrs. Curtin have just returned from a Comenius visit to Manchester where they spent time in our Comenius partner school, All Saints' Catholic Primary School, visiting the teachers and children. Teachers from De Letter School, Antwerp, another partner school, were also there.
The children had a very special assembly for the visitors, where they read the final part of our joint Elmer story "Where Can Elmer Be?". They also performed songs and dances, and finished with everyone holding hands and singing "Count on Me" by Bruno Mars, our Comenius song.

The children were very proud of their Comenius Boards
Our three mascots, Fergie from Manchester, Woezel from Antwerp and Freddy from Cork were reunited for the last time before they headed back home to their own schools.
The teachers visited the children in their classrooms and during break.
There was lots of excitement when Miss Leonard delivered penpal letters from children in Cloghroe school to their penpals in All Saints' school. The children were busy reading the news and admiring the lovely pictures.
We had a very special Mass where the First Communion children sang a song for us. Then we had a lovely breakfast at Father Ned's house.
Hard at work
We are learning all about Space
Parachute Fun
Our School Musical
Great fun is being had by everyone in our school musical "Frozen"
Hands of Friendship
On Friday April 24th, all three Comenius schools participated in a very special event. At 12 o'clock in Cork and Manchester and at 1 o'clock in Antwerp pupils in all three schools joined hands and sang our friendship song "Count on Me" by Bruno Mars at the exact same time. This event symbolised the strong bonds and friendships that have been created as a result of Comenius. Pupils really enjoyed this special moment.
"Super fast Fergie!"
Fergie has been having great fun in Cloghroe N.S. The mascot from Manchester has been enjoying the preparations for Cork City Sports. Fergie enjoys training with our athletes every week….he is super fast!!
March trip to Antwerp.
On the 3rd of March Mrs. Curtin, Miss.Coomey and Miss.O’Shea embarked on a Comenius mobility to the city of Antwerp. The teachers were very excited to bring Woezal back to Belgium and to have Fergie come visit us in Cloghroe once again. You can follow the mascots on their blog http://comenius-2013-2015.blogspot.be/
The teachers were also looking forward to reading the second part of the “Elmer and Wilbur” book.
When the teachers arrived in DeLetter school, they were greeted by our Comenius friends both from DeLetter school and also the teachers from All Saints Primary School, Manchester.

Visiting DeLetter school proved to be very informative for the teachers. The school is in many ways a contrast to our school in Cloghroe. Pupils begin their education at just two and a half years old. As the pupils are so young they have “nap time” for an hour and a half each day. Pupils also wear their own clothes to school each day and do not have a uniform. Pupils from a variety of different nationalities attend the school and therefore speak a variety of languages. Pupils generally speak Dutch and learn French in primary school. In secondary school pupils are taught English. The senior classes focus on fostering independence in the children. Children often go on cycling trips around the city or use the public tram service. The pupils also prepared and cooked lunch for the teachers. It was delicious!!
It was wonderful to see the Belgian pupils embraced our Irish culture. During the school assembly pupils performed a drama piece based on the “Children of Lir”, performed an Irish dance and also played a Gaelic football match. Thanks to Mr. Kelly for teaching the Belgian teachers some G.A.A skills when they visited in November. The teachers from Cloghroe were also presented with the second part of the “Elmer and Wilbur” book. We found out that Elmer is now lost in Belgium…..oh no!! Hopefully he will be found in the final section of the story.
The end of first day of the mobility was spent exploring the historical and cultural sites of this beautiful city. Antwerp is sometimes referred to as “The World’s Capital of Diamonds”. Approximately one mile in the Diamond District is taken by diamond cutting workshops, diamond dealers, merchants and brokers. Last year the diamond trade in Antwerp was worth over €55 billion!!
Antwerp is Europe's second largest port, after Rotterdam, handling more than 178 million tons of cargo annually. It is a transit port for goods going mainly to and from Germany, France, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Italy. The teachers also visited a famous museum. It had ten floors and over 470,000 objects!
Drama
Pupils in Cloghroe have really enjoyed watching the drama DVD's which were created by the pupils in All Saints Primary school and DeLetter school. Pupils in Cork used the traditional tales from Manchester and Antwerp as inspiration for recent drama lessons. Woezal had great fun during the lessons! We hope the boys and girls in Manchester and Antwerp and enjoying our video of the "Children of Lir", which was performed by 1st class.
Belgian Waffles!
Earlier this year, pupils from all three Comenius schools created a culinary customs book. The pupils in 2nd class were very excited to have the opportunity to explore the cookery book from Antwerp. We found it very easy to decide on which recipe to cook in our school kitchen….Belgian waffles of course!!
Our teacher cooked the waffles, which we prepared a fresh fruit salad to accompany the delicious waffles. We used apples, bananas, strawberries, grapes and blueberries. We even had some chocolate sauce on top. Woezal really enjoyed eating the waffles; he said they reminded him of home! Thank you to the pupils in the DeLetter school in Antwerp for the delicious recipe.

Baking Scones
We made scones using the lovely recipe book from our Comenius friends in Manchester. They were delicious.
Woezel meets Elmer
Woezel, from De letter school in Antwerp, met Elmer the Elephant in Junior Infants today. He heard all about the book the boys and girls in 2nd class wrote about Elmer, and how the children in De Letter school are now writing the next part of the story. Then the pupils in Junior Infants made their own little Elmers. It was hard work but lots of fun.
Healthy eating in Cloghroe!
We having great fun with our Comenius mascot from Antwerp! Pupils in Cloghroe N.S. are currently participating in a New Year “health kick”. Pupils are making an extra effort to eat healthy foods and engage in extra exercise. Woezel from DeLetter School in Antwerp even joined in on the fun. Woezel enjoyed tasting wholegrain foods and yummy fruit and vegetables. He particularly enjoyed toasting brown bagels in our school kitchen….yummy! Woezel brings a healthy lunch box to school each day. He is also enjoying all the extra fun and games outside!
November visit to Cloghroe.
Our partner Comenius schools recently visited Cloghroe N.S. Their visit included a whole school assembly, learning G.A.A. skills, a science fair and many class visits. We also had the opportunity to exchange our culinary customs books, our art portfolios and our pen pal letters. It was a huge success and the pupils really enjoyed chatting to the teachers about their schools in Antwerp and Manchester.

Traditional Irish stew in 6th class.
6th class pupils in Mrs.O'Connor's class recently prepared an Irish Lamb Stew. This recipe will be included in our "culinary customs" cookery book. It was worthy of a 5 star restaurant and had everyone 'flocking' to the staff-room!
Music and Politics in The County Hall
On the 6th of October, 5th class visited the county hall, where they experienced an educational music workshop at which children listened to 17th and 18th century musical instruments such as the harpsicorde, a baroque cello and recorder. Then they were treated to a spectacular view from the top of the County hall, 16 floors up. Fergie, our visiting mascot from Manchester, got to pretend that he was an Irish politican when they visited the Council Chamber of Cork County Council.
Baking in Junior Infants
As part of our “Irish Culinary Customs” book, Junior Infants made delicious Rice Crispie Buns in the staff room. They were very excited about the experience and Fergie, the Manchester mascot, even got a go mixing the ingredients.
Comenius Penpals
2nd class pupils in Miss.Coomey's class are busy forming friendships with pupils in De Letter School, Antwerp. The pupils wrote letters introducing themselves and expressing their hobbies and interests. Pupils in Cloghroe N.S. are already looking forward to receiving their replies in the coming weeks.
Culinary Customs Book
As part of our “Irish Culinary Customs” book, 3rd class pupils made traditional vegetable soup. Pupils harvested the last of the crops from our school garden in September. Miss.O'Connor's pupils put the produce to great use and cooked an organic vegetable soup in our school kitchen. It was delicious!
Our Comenius Patchwork story!
The pupils in Miss.O’Shea’s class have been very busy recently writing and illustrating their first book! As part of our Comenius project, pupils are engaging in a shared writing experience with both Antwerp and Manchester. The book which is a combination of factual and fictional writing is entitled “Elmer and Wilbur’s European Adventure”! Using the character “Elmer the elephant” as inspiration, pupils wrote their story which is set in Cork. 2nd class thoroughly enjoyed learning about the history of Cloghroe N.S., Blarney Castle, The English Market, Shandon Bells and Cork Airport. The beginning of the story is now complete. We look forward to finding out what Elmer does next, when the book travels to Antwerp.
Comenius
Cloghroe NS is participating in a Comenius project along with De Letter School, Antwerp, Belgium and All Saints’ School, Manchester, England. Comenius is an European Union educational project. It concerns school-level education, and is part of the EU’s Lifelong Learning Programme 2007-2013. It aims “to help young people and educational staff better understand the range of European cultures and values.” You can find out more about comenius at www.leargas.ie/comenius/ and follow the blog at http://comenius-2013-2015.blogspot.be/
In November 2013 three teachers from Cloghroe NS, along with another group of teachers from All Saints’ School, Manchester, visited De Letter School, Antwerp. They met with pupils and staff in the Belgian school, participating in school activities and workshops. They had a wonderful experience, discovering all about the children, their cultures and their school. As a result, the pupils of Cloghroe NS learnt all about De Letter school, about Antwerp and about Belgium.
In February 2014 a group of teachers from Antwerp and Manchester visited us here in Cloghroe School. Much fun was had by all as our children showcased the school with great enthusiasm, and in the best possible manner, incorporating music, song, dance, sports, games and of course educational activities, including teaching them some Irish. The visitors went to many classrooms and other areas of the school, getting actively involved in what the children were doing. They returned to their schools with lots to tell all about school in Ireland.
In recent months pupils in Cloghroe N.S. have been very busy in preparation for our June mobility. Students wrote pen pal letters, documented various events with the Belgian mascot Woezal and participated in playground games, which were common to all three countries.
Our recent visit to Manchester enabled us to exchange the pen pal letters, acquire a new school mascot and expand our range of teaching methodologies. Teachers from Cloghroe N.S. had the opportunity to explore the English education system, visit and observe lessons and practices in every classroom and plan several exciting projects which will begin in September. Pupils in Cloghroe N.S. can look forward to completing projects such as exploring European artists, creating a European cookery book, engaging in creative writing with both Belgium and England and participating in skype sessions with our European friends.
We look forward to participating in Comenius in the coming school year.
