City Sports
Cloghroe School has a long and proud involvement with Cork City and County Primary School Sports. Pupils first participated in the sports in the late seventies under the care of Padraig Ó Conaill. In those days, the School Sports were held in the Marydyke. Nowadays, this event is held in Páirc Uí Chaoimh and is one the largest and best-organised events in the country. For many years Mr Gerry Keady (now retired) prepared the athletes. Over the years Cloghroe has won many trophies and medals at these sports, including a number of County Championship Cups. Each year pupils eagerly await the May event and practise their technique on the school pitch under the eagle eye of Co-ordinator, Mrs. Aileen O Connell and teacher Mrs Noreen O’Connor.
As well as the City Sports, Cloghroe children are also encouraged to participate in the Blarney / Inniscarra Athletic Club sessions for primary school children which take place alternatively in both venues. This training and support for athletics in the community is of great benefit to all concerned.
