Trip to Ballyhass
Engineering Fun
Shane McDonagh of the Environmental Research Institute UCC joined us once again this week via Zoom to explain the science and engineering behind how our muscles work in our bodies. We had great fun creating model hands from card and even got the hands to move!
Sixth Class are Setting the Stage...
We’ve been busy here in 6th setting the stage for our musical productions. Unfortunately we won’t be able to put on a big performance in the hall like we’ve been used to in the past - but we’ve adapted!
Mrs. Kelly has been busy preparing our actors to record a short musical movie, and we’ve had loads of help in the form of our singing coaches, Ms. Niamh McCarthy and Mrs. Atkins-Maher, as well as our wonderful dancing coaches Ms. Murphy and Mrs. Fiona McSweeney. We want to say a big thank you to all those helping and supporting us and we’re looking forward to showing you the fruits of our labours!
Here are some photos of our preparations - see if you can guess what musicals we’re adapting

We investigate... Engineering for Energy
This week Dr. Shane McDonagh joined us (via Zoom!) to talk about engineering for energy. We talked about the different types of renewable energy and even tried our hand at constructing our own designs at wind turbines. See what you think!
We investigate... Infrastructure in Engineering
This week we got some hands on experience with engineering thanks to Steam Education and our facilitator Dr. Shane McDonagh (you’ll see him on the screen if you look closely enough!). We’ve been looking at engineering in infrastructure and tried our hand at making bridges that bear weight out of paper and lollipop sticks as well as designing some pretty stylish bird houses out of just lollipop sticks and blu-tac!
(The photographer takes no responsibility for eyes being closed in any of the photos. In fact, if you think about it, it's actually harder to capture a shot of people with their eyes closed, just by virtue of the fact that people spend so much time with their eyes open compared to blinking... So it's a display of talent, if anything.)

Christmas Wreaths
Happy Halloween from 6th Class!
Our Road to Code Begins!
Starting during Maths week, as an alternative look at how we can apply our problem-solving skills, 6th class have started our own individual coding programs!
We began our journey into coding using a website called Lightbot. This gave us some fundamental coding skills including sequencing and using loops. We have since taken up a 30-hour program through the code.org website, so we can fully equip ourselves with all the tools in a coder's arsenal! We're looking forward to our visits to the computer room over the next few weeks and months to continue our journey into coding! |

Space Week in 6th Class
|
We had a great time this week learning all about the science of the stars and our place in the cosmos!
The week was capped off on Friday morning with an hour-long interactive workshop with Frances McCarthy from CIT's Blackrock Castle Observatory. Frances broadcast to all three 6th classes, providing us with a wonderful slideshow to accompany her fun and fact-filled presentation. We learned some amazing new facts and information about the International Space Station (ISS). We then had the opportunity to ask our own questions on the subject to Frances and she duly obliged with some enlightening answers. We would like to say a HUGE thank you to Frances for taking the time to talk to us. Frances talked to us about the mission badges that each crew of the ISS wears, unique to their own mission. We were inspired, and decided to try our hand at designing our own - have a look and see what you think! |
