Tag Rugby with Ireland and Munster player Leah Lyons.
|
We were delighted to have had a fantastic 6 week block of tag Rugby with Leah Lyons.
We learned the basics of tag rugby. We did drills such as relays, passing, side step, tag and reaction games. We learned some of the main rules and played games at the end of each session. Leah was a great instructor. After the last session we did a Q and A with Leah. We learned about her inspirations, her thoughts on Women’s Rugby and her training routines. We think Leah is a fantastic role model. We really enjoyed our time with her. |
6th class school Tour to Oysterhaven
6th class went on our school tour to Oysterhaven on Monday the 28th of May.
Oysterhaven is an outdoor activity centre near Kinsale.
First we did some teamwork exercises; these were followed by the Jungle Quest part of the day.
We did obstacle course activities that involved things such as collaborative tasks, pulleys, rafts, bridges, walking and swinging on ropes and a lot of mud and water!
We had lunch in the bright sun before moving on to the water activities where we went kayaking, rafting and jumped off pontoons and the moonwalk floatable. The moonwalk was a big hit on the day.
We had a great day and would recommend this activity centre highly.

Engineer week visit from Phil Harris
A huge word of thanks to Phil Harris for coming in to talk to 6th class about his work as an engineer. He gave a fantastic talk and presentation about the various projects he has been involved in. He spoke too about the skills an engineer requires.
2018 Schools Heritage Project County edition Monard Glen and Ironworks
6th class have been busy this year working on a local history project on Monard Glen and Ironworks. The project is for the Discover Cork Schools Heritage Project county edition. Kieran McCarthy who co-ordinates the project came to the school and discussed various approaches we could take and outlined the project requirements.
We decided on Monard Glen and Ironworks as it is a rich historical site in our locality that we had not considered to date. We engaged in a field trip where we took photos, recorded buildings and interviewed Tom O'Byrne who is the current proprietor. We got creative too, we wrote haiku and other poems, composed a layered rhythm response in music and made a replica model of the entire Mill system, the Monard viaduct and all worker cottages! We did other interviews and lots of research at the Blarney library, we found lots of historical articles in the newspaper archives. Eventually we compiled everything into a project book.
For our Christmas performance we presented the project to the school and sound-tracked a short drama sketch based on our reading of the topic.
We really enjoyed the project, our model and a copy of the book is currently on display in the school!

6th Class Pitch and Putt
6th class pitch and putt trip
During September 6th class went to Rocklodge pitch and putt, each class had two lessons. We met there at 9:00AM to 10:30AM. We met a lovely man called Steven. He gave us a pitcher and a putter each, we also got a tee and a golf ball. He showed us how to putt the ball. He also showed us how to use the pitcher and how to chip the ball. We were put in 4 groups and we all practiced pitching and putting the ball. On the second day we played a scramble in new groups. We all enjoyed our mornings playing pitch and putt.
