Farewell to 6th class
We had a special assembly to bid farewell to our 6th class this morning. We are so proud of them and wish them all the best in their new secondary schools. Hopefully they will come back to visit us some day.
Time to say goodbye!!
The countdown is on for 6th class students as they enter the final few weeks of their time in Cloghroe NS after eight enjoyable years. The past year has been extremely busy with a combination of academic and extra-curricular activities occupying the children’s minds.

Confirmation
60 students from 6th class received their Confirmation in a ceremony on Tuesday 16th of the May in St.Senan’s Church. After several weeks of preparation the children along with their sponsors and families enjoyed a lovely ceremony with Bishop Crean. The children were outstanding in their efforts in preparation for and attitude on the day. A special thanks to Fr.Tom for all his help in preparation for the ceremony.
Musical
6th class children were very busy getting ready for our school musical Aladdin. With actors and dancers coming from 5th and 6th it has meant that every child in 6th has played their part. We thank all the teachers who have helped prepare them, in particular Ms.Kelly from an acting point of view and Mrs.Murphy and our external instructor Jenny for the dances. The children loved every minute of it.
Quiz
Three sixth class students Aodhan Cooke, Sadhbh O’Riordan and Benedict Coffey represented the school in the Scór na bPáistí Tráth na gCeist this year. They won the Muskerry Final at Ovens GAA Hall on the 19th of February. Their knowledge of Irish Culture and GAA greatly improved following early morning practice sessions with their teachers Ms. Dineen, Ms. Kiely and Mrs. O’Connor.
Active Schools
6th class played their part in participating in the Active Schools Week with a host of activities including classroom and yard exercises, dancing, local walk, orienteering and many more fun activities.
FAI 5 a side Soccer Competition
We entered both boys and girls teams for the FAI’s annual competition. The boys competition was held in Blarney while the girls competition was held in Carrigaline. Both teams competed well against top class opposition after weeks of trials and training with Mr.Ryan, Mr.Kelly, Ms O’Connor and Ms.Coomey.
Baskteball Blitz
Boys and girls in 6th class took part in both competitive and non-competitive blitzes in Neptune and Parochial Hall this year. After months of practice with Mr.Whitty, Mr.Kelly and Mrs.Lynch the children represented the school with great heart and skill.
Entrance Exams
6th class children worked extremely hard all year but in particular since Christmas as they prepared for the transition to secondary school and entrance exams. Each school has its own style of testing and they vary between traditional exams in Irish, English and Maths to newer methods of testing using aptitude tests. Our children will attend 10 different schools including; Scoil Mhuire Gan Smál Blarney, Ballincollig Community School, Coláiste Choilm Ballincollig, Presentation Brothers College, Spiorad Naomh Bishopstown, Christian Brothers College, Mount Mercy, Scoil Mhuire, Bandon Grammar and Pobal Scoil Chorca Dhuibhne.
Class Novels
In the final term 6th class have enjoyed reading class novels together including The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, Riding out the Hurricane and Animal Farm. As well as enjoying the journey of the stories children also learned a huge amount on serious topics such as World War 2 and Hurricane Katriana. We hope these novels will inspire children to continue reading as a hobby.
New Lunch Time Arrangements
As the weather improved this spring the school has made use of the top pitch at lunch time. In consultation with 6th class students a rota was designed which provides boys and girls from 4th, 5th and 6th a chance to play soccer, bulldog as well as having free time for activities such as Frisbee and skipping during big break. Boys and girls from 6th class have also volunteered for refereeing duties which has been a huge help to teachers on duty. The knock on effect for the school has resulted in more space on the bottom yard for all the other classes to enjoy.
6th Class
The 2016/2017 6th class began their final school year in Cloghroe NS in late August and the first month has been a very busy and enjoyable one. The 63 students have settled well and are working extremely hard in all curricular areas. Being the "top dogs" this year certainly has its benefits as the 6th class children often receive first refusal on plenty of extracurricular activities. The first such "perk" was a trip to Ballyanly for a Pitch and Putt and lesson from Steven Enneguess and his highly skilled coaches. With the schools close proximity to Ballyanly and Rocklodge as well as Muskerry Golf Course over the ditch from us it would be no surprise to see some of our students follow in the footsteps of Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry. September was a busy month in 6th class with many secondary schools including Blarney, Christians, Colaiste Choilm and BCS visiting the children and promoting their school. Children are advised to have at least two schools in mind to avoid disappointment. Teaching practice student Ms.Moroney taught the students how to create a mini company with a focus on a slogans, logos and a Powerpoint presentation. The future of the country is safe in their hands with some fantastic innovative ideas. In class the students have been busy with Mé Féin aistí as Gaeilge, a focus on World War 1 & World War 2 in history, geography and art and much much more.
