6th class Art Project
Ms.Flynn`s 6th class participated in an art project. An artist named Ms. Schewe came into the school. The project took place over five days in May and June. We took some photos, made those photos into collages, and then painted them. The students voted which collages they would paint on the two large canvasses and the majority of the students painted their own small canvasses. We greatly enjoyed it and learned a lot in the process.
Our canvasses now hang proudly in the main stairwell in the new building for all to admire. We are exceptionally proud of our achievement.

Local Tour
At 7:45 on the 11th of June 2015 the pupils of sixth class waited anxiously to hop on the bus and started our local tour. We went to many different places including Mass Rock, Matehy Graveyard, Dripsey Ambush and many more! We especially enjoyed Iniscarra Dam and Kilcrea Friary. When we arrived at the Dam, a worker named Frank told us how the dam works. He gaves us an opportunity to go up on top of the Dam and and look at how the Dam works! Another place we visited was Kilcrea Friary. It was built by Monks around 550 years ago. We got to explore the Friary and ask some questions and Mr O’ Connell was with us every step of the way!
Gymnastic Competition in Switzerland!!
Best of luck to Caroline Crowley, Sophie Healy and Elizabeth Cussen who are off to Geneva, Switzerland for a gymnastics competition on Wednesday May 13th. We are very proud of you and all your hard work. What an achievement!!
The Irish Diaspora
Last week the boys and girls learnt all about the Irish Diaspora. We read various accounts of famous Irish people abroad and carried out research in the computer room on some well known and not so well known Irish people living abroad. The children presented their projects to the 5th class pupils and answered any questions which arose.
Confirmation Day in Blarney! Sixth class were
blessed with the weather on Thursday 26th for their Confirmation. Thank you to Canon Roberts, who confirmed the children, for his kind and wise words in yesterday's ceremony.
Below are some of the photographs from yesterday. Enjoy!
Art Competition winners
Sixth class entered the Blarney Community Council St Patrick's Day art competition. The theme was The 250th anniversary of the foundation of Blarney village. We worked in groups on A2 size paper. To our great delight we came 1st and 3rd in the competition.
Lá Glas agus Céilí Mór!
To celebrate the forthcoming St. Patrick's day festivities and in keeping with all things green, we all made a great effort to walk to school this week. On Friday, we had an opportunity to listen to a very interesting talk on global warming and the importance of reducing our carbon footprint. We also had great craic dancing the Walls of Limerick together.
Going Round in Circles!
Maths can be great fun as Ms. O'Connor's class recently discovered. We learnt interesting facts about the circle. We learnt how to measure the diameter and circumference of many items we brought in from home.
Scór na bPáistí
Many congratulations to Aaron O'Donovan on his recent success at the County Finals of Scór na bPáistí. Aaron is an accomplished fiddle and banjo player and finished in the top three in his category.

World Tour
Ms. O'Connor's class recently made a whistle stop tour of the globe taking in Greece and China. We learnt about the culture and history of both countries. We also learnt about the ill fated journey of the Titanic and created posters advertising the Titanic as the most luxurious liner of its time. Many thanks to Sarah Twomey for bringing in a set of ancient Chinese Iron Balls, a family heirloom, to the class.
FAI 5-A-Side Champions
The boys from 6th class competed in a five-a-side tournament in Mayfield on February 24th. We won all our matches and are through to the next round in Turners Cross. If we win that we will be competing for Cork in the Aviva Stadium!!
Well done to all involved.
Well done to all involved.
Shrove Tuesday
Shrove Tuesday is traditionally celebrated on the day before
Ash Wednesday. It is customary to make pancakes using ingredients which usually
cannot be consumed during Lenten time. Ms. O'Connor's class had great fun making
pancakes filled with all sorts of delicious ingredients.
Chinese New Year
Ms Flynns 6th class celebrated The Chinese New Year by making Chinese lanterns. This year it is being celebrated on February 19th. It is the year of the goat.

Saint Brigid
We made St Brigids crosses to celebrate one of Irelands patron saints. The cross is believed to bring good health and fortune for the coming year to a household. We used rushes and pipe cleaners. It is much harder than we make it look here!!
Operation Transformation
Sixth class are getting fit and healthy with Operation Transformation. We are stretching every day and following some of the lessons from their school plan once a week. Lots of creaking and grumbling can be heard in the morning as we stretch but hopefully we will loosen up! The lessons have been great fun so far with lots of games and running. We are only in week 2 so watch this space!
Bowled Over!
Ms Flynn's 6th class have been making paper mache bowls since December. We started by mixing large quantities of flour, salt and water to make a paste. We then cut newspaper into thin strips. We greased the bowls with fairy liquid and laid the paper diagonally across the bowl. After this we covered the paper in the glue and repeated 7/8 times. At one point the classroom resembled a soup kitchen with Ms Flynn filling our bowls with mugs of gruel like glue!!
We allowed the bowls to dry for several weeks before turning them out. Next we painted them white to cover the newspaper before decorating them. The final step was varnishing them to make them strong and durable. They may not be dishwasher proof but hopefully we will get lots of use from them.

Space Cadets
On January 13th Skydome visited Cloghroe N.S. The pupils from 6th class and one lucky 5th class got to visit the large dome shaped tent in Halla Uí Chonaill. We learned about the planets, dwarf planets and their moons. We also looked at the stars and constellations. We really enjoyed the experience.

Sharing the Christmas spirit with those in need. |

On 12 December last all the pupils and teachers of 6th class wore their Christmas jumpers to school in support of Cork Simon Community. The school was awash with colour, lights and fun. The pupils also created individual Christmas cards for residents of Simon's facilities throughout the city. Everyone really enjoyed the day and over €400 was raised for this very worthy cause. Well done to all who participated.
I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here!
'Cleachtadh a dheanann máistreacht' is an Irish saying meaning 'practice makes perfect' and this was certainly the case in relation to Ms. O'Connor's class Christmas play. It was a whole class project from beginning to end. The pupils decided on a theme, wrote the script, arranged the music, organised costumes (including beautiful pink wigs!) and performed in the school hall which was packed to the rafters. Every member of the cast can be very proud of their fantastic achievement.
Christmas Comedy
Ms Flynn's 6th class spent the past two weeks working on our Christmas comedy. Brainstorming and script writing were the first steps. Rehearsals intensified in the run up to the performance day, Dec 18th. Costumes and props were begged, borrowed or stolen.
Excitement was high on the day. We had a final rehearsal in the classroom with our sound manager Mrs. O Connell!!! Finally it was time to go to the hall. Our play was last in the line-up. We had a news excerpt, advertisements and Corks version of Dance Mums- Dance Mams. The audience participation went down especially well and The Candy Apple dance troop were voted the winners. We finished off with a sing along to Taylor Swifts song Shake It Off. Well done to the entire class for all their hard work. A special thanks to Mrs. Edwards for all her help with costumes, props and photography. Happy Christmas!
Christmas Chaos Came to Town Today!!
Sixth Class performed their Christmas play today, entitled 'Christmas Chaos'. The children worked hard over the last few weeks in school writing their own script, building character profiles, gathering props and assembling costumes. The play focussed on the arrival of several family members, from near and far, for Christmas dinner. Some were more welcome than others!! The children thoroughly enjoyed scripting and performing their own play.
Sixth class have been very busy making Christmas wreaths and centre pieces. We put our pruning skills to the test in an effort to collect as much foliage as possible. I'm sure you will agree we did a great job!
It's beginning to smell a lot like Christmas.....
We tasted it!! MMmmmmnnnMaking our Christmas Cake!
The spirit of Christmas came early to Mrs Golden’s 6th class in November as we prepared our ingredients for our Christmas cake. Sultanas, currants and candied peel were all weighed carefully and soaked overnight in a festive beverage!! We used our mathematical skills to measure and cut parchment paper to line our tin well. Then, we combined butter, sugar, eggs and flour together and added grated nutmeg and Christmas spices. We placed the cake in the oven for hours and really enjoyed the smell of Christmas that filled the room!
We iced and decorated it today and plan to taste it on Friday 12th December! Our very own silver medallist!Ms. O'Connor's class were thrilled when Hieu arrived into school displaying his silver medal from the recent All Ireland Karate Finals held at the Tallaght Leisure Centre Dublin. Well done Hieu, we are all really proud of you!
