Shrove Tuesday |
A big thank you to Mrs O' Leary who was very busy in the staffroom making pancakes for us all to enjoy!
Lifetime Lab Visit
The children had an electric visit to Lifetime Lab! They conducted a series of experiments and explored the topic of electricity and circuits.
Author Visit
Olive Mooney, author of The Chronicles of Cadaver College, came to visit 3rd and 4th class recently. She read some chapters from her series of books, which were most enjoyable. The children engaged in a question and answer session with Olive and she offered a great insight into the life of an author. Hopefully there are some future authors amongst us!
Programming Professionals!
We have been busy improving our IT skills with a focus on coding.
Our Locality
We have been actively exploring some features of our local environment and how things have changed over the years. Michael O' Mahony (Luke's Grandad), who was a past pupil of the old school, kindly offered to come in to speak to the children about what it was like to grow up in the area and the changes that have occured. It was a most interesting visit in which the children and teachers alike gained a wealth of knowledge! Thanks so much to Mr O' Mahony!
Science Week
We had great fun celebrating Science Week 2019. As the global focus of the week was on Climate Change we watched a very interesting documentary on the current state of affairs, following which we had a discussion about what forms our 'Green Action' could take, and what we could do to help. We decided upon simple ways we can be more energy and waste efficient at home and in school.
We also did several experiments throughout the week and had great fun predicting, carrying out and analysing the results. First up, we we made lava lamps using oil, water, food colouring and effervescent tablets. This gave some pretty cool effects!
The children carried out an eggs-periment over a few days of the week as part of their homework, in which they put a boiled egg in vinegar and predicted, observed and reviewed the changes taking place. We ended up with some quite bouncy eggs!
We had great fun, and a little mess, making oobleck in class. It was amazing what you can create with a little cornflour and water.
Finally, we put a request out to any parents working in the field of science who would be interested in talking to the 4th class. Ciara O' Connor ( Stephanie's mom!) kindly obliged. She gave a wonderful presentation on biochemistry and explained to us the work she does in the lab in CUH. Thanks to Ciara O' Connor for inspiring the children to become scientists!

Halloween Fun
It has been a busy week in 4th class as we celebrated Oíche Shamhna. We made Báirín Breac and included the ring and coins. We decided to leave out the symbols of bad luck! We played traditional Halloween games and a not so traditional game of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire! On Friday we dressed up to raise money for the Mercy Hospital. Happy Halloween!
National Fitness Day
National Fitness Day took place on September 26th. The aim of this initiative is to get more people more active more often. As an Active School we love to get involved in such initiatives. We had extra Body Breaks, skipping breaks, got our bodies moving through dance and enjoyed a table tennis lesson.
Robot Makers Of The Future
It was time for us to become engineers as we came together to make our robots. In groups we constructed robots of all shapes and sizes using recycled materials. The children has a fun week coming together to plan and design their robots and the finished products were amazing!
Fresh From The Garden
It is that time of year again where we get to harvest the vegetables from our school garden. Mr Keady continues to kindly guide us and teach us how to make the most from our garden. After harvesting the vegetables it was time to put them to some use! Mrs O' Leary made a beautiful soup and prepared beetroot for us to taste and enjoy. It was delicious. Thank you Mr Keady and Mrs O' Leary!
