Under The Hawthorn Tree
Recently we have been reading the above novel by Marita Conlon - McKenna. We really enjoyed the storyline in the book and have learnt so much about the Great Famine of 1847 also. To celebrate our love of the novel we designed the original homestead of the O'Driscoll family basing it on the description in the book. We used various materials including cardboard, string, clothes pegs, lego pieces and straws to name but a few. It was an extremely enjoyable process and we are very pleased with the results!
Celebrating Engineers Week 2018
This has been a very busy week for the children of 4th class. We began the week with a screening of the film "Dream Big". The creators of the film hope to transform the way we think about engineering and we believe it had the desired effect on the boys and girls. We also worked in teams to create the tallest structures possible using only spaghetti and giant marshmallows! We are sure you will agree that the finished products are very impressive! We would also like to thank Domhnall O'Sullivan-Walsh for demonstrating the mechanics of his Lego BMW motorbike to his classmates. Domhnall took our breath away when he told us he completed the motor bike in only one week!!. Maith thú Domhnall!

BUDDING YOUNG SCIENTISTS IN FOURTH CLASS
During Science Week 2017, Fourth Class pupils set up their own Science Workshop in their classroom & put on some weird & wonderful science experiments that were very exciting & truly amazing .Pupils witnessed multi-coloured lava lamps being made using water, sunflower oil & food colouring. They saw a chicken bone turn as soft of jelly ,demonstrated inflating balloons using vingear ,water & baking powder. Exploding volcanoes & bouncy eggs brought some great excitement to the class.Children made elephant toothpaste, plastic milk , density towers & mentoes caused a bottle of coca -cola to explode . A celery stick emersed in water & food dye demonstrated how water travels up through plants while a plastic bag full of water did not leak when pointed pencils were pierced through it. It all sounds like magic but it was science at work!!! Well done to all the boys & girls who did such a great job & perhaps one day, could be of our future young scientists!
Spooky times at Halloween.
We all had a brilliant time at Halloween dressing up in various costumes and having a spooky stroll to school. Teachers hardly recognised us in our change of dress code!!
Having fun creating potions, zappy zoomers and magic flowers.
Recently in fourth class, we conducted a number of scientific experiments. We investigated the effects of adding food colouring to flowers. We constructed flying machines from cardboard and drinking straws. We also examined the density of water, oil and syrup when mixed together. We had lots of fun working with our fellow scientists and learned a great deal also!.
Visiting the woodland walkway
At present we are learning all about the different types of trees which can be found in our locality. To enhance our learning in the classroom we decided to take our learning outdoors and stroll through the wonderful woodland walkway. Once there we took bark and leaf rubbings and also identified many different varieties of deciduous and evergreen trees.
