Rain Gauges
We made rain gauges using plastic bottles and rulers. We measured the rainfall over a one week period and used our mathematical skills to fill the average rainfall that week. There was certainly more rainfall than one would like in May!!
Mastering our Maths
Recently pupils are learning to compare regular and irregular 2D shapes, identifying tessellating shapes, identifying, describing and comparing 3D shapes. Pupils were also identifying lines of symmetry in shapes and exploring mirror symmetry.

The Engineering Fun Continues....
A huge thank you to Phil Harris, Isabelle's Dad who came to speak to Third Class pupils this week. Phil has a fascinating career as engineering and has worked on many interesting projects such as creating a G.P.S. system and now working on materials and technologies used in plane. Phil provided the pupils with the history of the Wright Brothers creating the first aircraft, right up to the advanced technology which is utilised today. It was a very informative morning. Thank you Phil!
Building a Bridge!
As we continue to explore different engineering styles and concepts, we focused on civil engineering while completing an art lesson this week. Using junk art materials we worked together to create a stable bridge structure. After brainstorming and deciding on the most stable structure we created our own bridges. We then tested the structures. It was great fun!
Chance!
Third class pupils enjoyed exploring the vocabulary associated with chance and playing games based on this mathematical concept.
Guest speaker- Engineering Week
A massive thank you to Roisín's Dad, Ross O'Donovan for speaking to 3rd class this morning. Ross is a civil engineer and provided an active and informative presentation to 3rd class. Genius Hour Projects!
Third class pupils exceeded all expectations with the quality of their January Genius Hour projects. During genius hour students of all levels are empowered to explore their own passions. The children firstly create a project proposal and explore different research methodologies. The pupils then research their topics both in school and home and create their finished project/product. Pupils engage with their projects for one hour per week for three to four weeks. As pupils chose their subject matter and presentation method themselves, there was a diverse range of topics covered in January. These topics included knitting, baking, lizards, engines and soccer teams to mention but a few! It was a wonderful opportunity to share knowledge with their peers. Our school principal came to view some of the presentations and she was extremely impressed! We are already looking forward to seeing your February projects!
Grandparents Day!
Third class pupils in Cloghroe N.S. had a wonderful day celebrating Grandparents Day, in conjunction with Catholic Schools Week. Over one hundred Grandparents attended mass with their grandchildren in St.Senan’s Church and then returned to the school hall for some tea and cakes. Science Week!
For Science Week 2017 we were discovering a different amazing science fact every day which sparked some interesting discussion in the classroom!
We conducted some experiments in class. We learned about gas and chemical reactions by discovering how to inflate a balloon using bread soda and vinegar.
We also learned that we are made up of millions and billions of cells! Our cells are much too small to see without a microscope. We had to create the look of a cell using an egg and some vinegar. It’s amazing that eggs look a lot like cells. The translucent egg covering beneath the dissolved shell acts the same as a cell’s membrane, the squishy boundary that holds the cell together. The yolk acted as the cell’s nucleus, and the rest of the liquid was like a cell’s cytoplasm

Usually a series of items were baked into the loaf. It was then evenly sliced and whichever item you received in your slice was a glimpse into your future. We all tasted a slice of delicious Bairín Breac in class. Congratulations to the six pupils who found the rings…. We wonder who will get married first in years to come!!

Pupils have been exploring the Stone Age in History lessons. We explored ancient cave art. Pupils created their most recent masterpieces while lying on the floor!! Pupils had the opportunity to truely experience cave art!
Science Experiment!
Mars is sometimes called the Red Planet. This is because most of the surface of Mars is covered in a thick layer of iron oxide dust. This is the same metal as a rusty car! It gives the planet a reddish appearance. This week, third class pupils worked scientifically to investigate the effects of air and water on materials. We explored the effects of water on sand and steel wool. We look forward to watching the wool rust over the coming days and weeks.
