Hurling & Football Blitz

On Wednesday 15th June, 3rd class pupils took part in a hurling and football blitz with boys and girls from the other schools in the parish - Vicarstown, Dripsey and Berrings.  The blitz gave pupils a chance to practice their hurling and football skills through a series of short matches.  The emphasis was all about taking part and having fun.  The blitz also provided a great chance for the children to get to know other boys and girls in the parish.  Well done to all!!

3rd Class School Tour

On Friday June 3rd, Rang III set off for our school tour in Farran Wood with Compass Club.   Our day involved many fun and educational activities.  The tour managed to incorporate different areas of the curriculum such as S.E.S.E., Art and P.E.  We went on a scavenger hunt through the woods to see what plants and creatures we could find.  Our guides were very knowledgeable about the woods.   Some of us were lucky enough to see the beautiful deer that live in Farran Woods.  They must have liked us because a number of the deer came over to the wire to say hello to us!   We did some clay modelling and used what we could find around us to add features to these clay creatures.  Some of us chose to bring our clay home, while others chose to find a home for their clay in the woods.  Keep an eye out for these creations next time you’re in Farran Woods!!  Other activities included rock climbing, taking a rope walk while blind-folded and shelter building.   As well as this, we played some co-operative games which involved us working as a team.  We enjoyed having our picnic in the lovely sunshine.  The children of Rang III were well behaved on the day and their guides complimented them by saying they were very good listeners who were willing to take part in all of the activities.  It was a very enjoyable tour and a great day was had by all.

Constructing shapes

3rd class have been learning about 2-D and 3-D shapes in Maths.  Here we are constructing some of these shapes.

Stepping it out in Dance Class

Recently, we had a module of modern dance lessons.  Our teacher was the very talented Claudia.  She showed us some great dance moves and routines and we had great fun taking part in the class.  We even got to make up our very own dance routines in our last lesson.

Mountains

We have spent some time this year looking at the topic of mountains.  As well as learning about the formation of mountains in SESE, we completed some mixed media pieces of Art based on a volcano and we also created a volcanic eruption by mixing bread soda and vinegar together.

Green fingers in Rang 3

Miss L. O'Connor's class had some great success growing a variety of vegetables and herbs.  They took great care of them in the classroom at first and recently they were replanted in our school garden with the help of Mr. Keady.

Designing & Making: A Model of the Earth's Layers

3rd class recently made models of the Earth's layers using plasticine.

Tráth na gCeist

Rang a trí ag baint taitneamh as tráth na gceist do Seachtain na Gaeilge.

Commemorating the 1916 Rising

On March 15th, Cloghroe N.S. commemorated the Easter Rising of 1916.  We had an outdoor ceremony in the morning where we raised our National Flag and sang our National Anthem.  This was followed by a lovely assembly full of Irish songs (sung by each class) and Irish dancing.  3rd Class sang "Mo Ghille Mear".  Later we listened to the Proclamation being read out.  Pupils in 3rd class also wrote a new version of the proclamation entitled "My 2016 Proclamation for Ireland", where pupils outlined their hopes for the Ireland of the future.  As well as this, the children dressed up in the style of that time in 1916.  Well done to all the boys and girls for the great effort and imagination they put into their costumes.  Have a look at 3rd class in their costumes!!

3rd Class Indoor Hurling Blitz

On March 1st, a team of 3rd class boys took part in a indoor hurling blitz in Whitechurch.  Cloghroe played two teams each from Whitechurch N.S. and Rathpeacon N.S.  Cloghroe were the eventual winners.  Well done to the boys and their coaches.

3rd Class Indoor Camogie Blitz

On 23rd February an indoor camogie team comprised of girls from 3rd class took part in a blitz in Cloughduv.  The team played very well and came in second place.  Well done to the girls and their coaches.

Time for Gymnastics

Pupils have been doing Gymnastics during PE lessons recently.  They focused on different ways of jumping and rolling and practiced balancing on different parts of the body.  Pupils got the chance to work in pairs and larger groups and also used different apparatus such as benches and mats throughout the lessons.  Great effort was put in by everyone.

Farming

3rd class have been learning about food and farming.  They learned about old and new farming methods, crops grown in Ireland, various farm animals and what they provide us with.  They also looked at The Great Famine in Ireland, why it happened and the effect it had on the country.  The children searched for food items at home that contained various types of cereal crops such as wheat, barley, rye, maize and rice.

Wanted - Pirates!!

3rd class recently designed some wanted posters based on the theme of pirates.  They also got involved in some tea staining to give the posters and old style, authentic feel.  Watch out for those pirates!!

A Special Visitor

Recently, Mrs. Mullane's class had a very special visit from Lieutenant Philip O'Leary, a member of the Irish Defence Forces.  He showed the class his badges and medals and also demonstrated the correct way to salute someone.

Halloween Costumes

Everyone made a huge effort in walking to school on Friday 23rd October for our Spooky Stroll.  Third class children put great imagination and effort into their costumes as part of this event too.  Some children were almost unrecognisable!!!

Skipping Workshop

We had great fun practicing our skipping skills during our skipping workshop.

Maths Week

To celebrate Maths Week, 3rd Class children participated in a Maths Trail around the school.

Team Hope Christmas Shoebox Appeal

The children of 3rd Class decided to spread some Christmas hope and cheer recently by taking part in the Team Hope Christmas Shoebox Appeal.  Pupils wrapped shoeboxes and filled them with some very thoughtful and useful items.  The shoeboxes are being sent to some less fortunate children in other parts of the world including Africa and Eastern Europe.  The children hope their gifts will bring some happiness, smiles and laughter to these children at Christmas.  We are very proud of the thoughtfulness and kindness shown by 3rd class in taking part in this appeal.

Fun with Science

During the term children in 3rd class learned a lot by doing some various Science activities and experiments.  We also had a bit of fun along with all this learning!!  Some of the topics we looked at were static electricity, sound, how to collect fingerprints and weather (including making observations and recording weather).
