Cloghroe National School News Broadcast
Ms. Daly’s class have been busy acting as a News Team over the past number of weeks. They have been writing and gathering reports from other classes about the exciting things that have been happening in the school all year. The News Team have compiled these to create ‘Cloghroe National School News’ - ‘CNN Broadcast’, within the school. Our reporters then present the news over the school intercom for everyone to enjoy. It has been lovely to read and hear the fantastic news reports from our wonderful students across the school.
Sunflower Seed Update
Ms. Daly’s class were busy measuring their sunflowers over the past couple of weeks. We are happy to report that our seeds have grown big and tall. Some of our sunflowers are now stretching to a height of approximately 29 cm tall so we have taken them home to plant them in larger pots and in our gardens.
Mrs. Hockey’s & Mrs. Mullane’s 4th class, Ms. L O’Connor’s 3rd class, Ms. Leonard’s 2nd Class and Mrs. Curtin’s Senior Infants have joined our Sunflower Challenge. We have really enjoyed seeing the pictures of their sunflowers growing taller every week.

Here Comes the Sunflower
Ms. Daly’s Rang a Dó are partaking in the Redcastle Sunflower Festival in memory of the Mullan Family. We have challenged other classes to join in and can’t wait to share our pictures with them as we are already seeing signs of germination in our seedlings. We are enjoying learning about how to care for our sunflowers and what a seed needs to grow. Rang a dó are looking forward to applying our maths knowledge throughout the summer when we can measure our sunflowers as they grow.
Recreating Famous Masterpieces
Ms. Daly and Ms. Leonard’s classes are a very creative bunch! The boys and girls have been learning about and recreating famous pieces of art by artists such as Frida Kahlo, Pablo Picasso, Edvard Munch, Helen Mabel Trevor, Leonardo da Vinci and many more. The children chose some of their favourite pieces of art and then recreated these in their own style in school. The children gathered fabric, clothing, play dough, lego and various other every day objects to set the scene of their chosen piece. Then the pupils photographed their recreations and made frames for their pictures. The results are almost indistinguishable from the real deal!
Full of Fun!
Rang a Dó are full of knowledge about capacity! The boys and girls have been estimating and measuring the capacity of various containers they can find at home and in their classrooms.
Planting Bean Seeds
Second class planted bean seeds in our classroom. We planted the seeds outside of paper towels in clear plastic cups so that we could see signs of growth. Once we could see a root and a shoot, the boys and girls took their bean plants home to plant in their gardens.
Bubble Bombs & Balloon Blow-Up Experiments
2nd class were exploring how to make a balloon blow-up without breathing air into it. We mixed baking soda, which is a base, with vinegar, which is an acid, and observed the chemical reaction that took place. Carbon dioxide (a gas) was formed and this inflated our balloons. We also made bubble bombs using the same mixture and again saw how the chemical reaction made our zip-lock bags inflate.
