Charity Toy Appeal
2nd class proudly organised a Toy Collection for children in South Lebanon, in conjunction with Berrings Macra. Thanks to the Macra members for liaising with the army and thanks to the 2nd class pupils in Cloghroe N.S for their generosity. It was wonderful to end our year with a good deed. We wish to commend the pupils on their kindness and compassion Well done to everyone involved!
A visit from a Fireman!
Many thanks to Miss.O'Donoghue's dad who visited our school recently. Anthony is a fireman and he told us all about his job. We were informed that firemen have only 60 seconds to leave in the fire engine once they hear the fire alarm!! We now realise that firemen are trained very thoroughly and are very brave, risking their lives to save others. At the end of the session we had an opportunity to try on the fire protective clothing...it was very heavy!
First Holy Communion
Huge congratulations to the pupils in 2nd class who received their First Holy Communion on the 28th of May. Miss.O’Shea and Miss.O’Donoghue were extremely proud of the pupils preparation before the ceremony and their participation and performance on the day. The sun was shining and the day was full of smiles and laughter. We hope both pupils and parents had a wonderful day!
Questions and Answers with the Nurses.
2nd class were delighted to welcome Miss.O'Shea's cousins Jacqueline and Michelle to Cloghroe N.S. Both girls are qualified nurses and engaged in a very informative questions and answers session. The nurses informed us about college options and the training course for nurses. They outlined a typical day for an Irish nurse on a hospital ward. They brought along a stethoscope, a blood pressure monitor, an oxygen mask and a fob watch. We compared Jacqueline's graduation photo to a graduation photo from the 1960's. The uniforms were very different! After the lovely afternoon with Jacqueline and Michelle many pupils in 2nd class would now like to pursue a career in the medical world. Míle buíochas cailíní!
Ancient Egypt
Rang a dó have been exploring the history of Ancient Egypt. Pupils were fascinated by pyramids, mummies and hieroglyphics. Pupils created their own Pharaoh hats to conclude this topic.
Remembering 1916
2nd class pupils have participated in very informative history lessons in recent weeks. Pupils have explored the 1916 Rising and are looking forward to commemorating the centenary anniversary over Easter. Pupils read newspaper extracts and diary entries from the leaders and civilians. Pupils performed songs such as Pádraig Pearse, Our Nation Once Again and Amhran na bhFiann. Pupils also wrote a new version of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic. To conclude our studies pupils dressed in 1916 costume for raising our National Flag. Pupils had previously studied the origin and the meaning of our tricolour flag.
Seó faisin
Bhí an craic againn i rith seachtain na Gaeilge. Bhí cluiche bingo againn. Bhí ceilí againn sa chlos. Anuas ar sin, bhí seó faisin againn. Chaitheamar eadaí deasa. Bhaineamar an-taitneamh as!
Engineering Week.
To celebrate Engineering Week, the two 2nd classes came together to develop their engineering skills. Pupils worked in groups to discuss, plan and build a new school using lego. Pupils drew up their plans before starting to build, just like real engineers. Some of the new schools included features such as an runway for the teacher's private jets and a hot tub for pupils during golden time!!
Spring has Sprung!
The boys and girls in 2nd class enjoyed observing signs of Spring, during a recent nature walk. Pupils explored the different types of plants and trees. Pupils also watch a bird building it's nest with great care and precision.
Texaco Art Competition
Rang a dó really enjoyed creating pieces of art, which we will enter in the "Texaco Art Competition". Before posting our entries we held a mini art contest in school. Congratulations to our prize winners!
Love is in the air!
Pupils had great fun planning a romantic surprise for their parents. Pupils created beautiful Valentine's Day art and secretly posted the art home. We hope that parents enjoyed this special surprise on Valentines Day!
First Penance.
2nd class pupils in Cloghroe N.S. are really looking forward to making their First Confession tomorrow night. The boys and girls will be making history, as they are the first pupils from Cloghroe N.S. to receive a sacrament in the newly refurbished St.Senan’s Church. Best of luck to rang a dó on their special night!
Mindfull meditation
Pupils thoroughly enjoyed their first mindfulness session with Mrs.Coleman. Pupils will engage in mindfulness every Friday. It is a wonderful methodology to develop pupils relaxation and self-regulation skills.
Exploring money.
2nd class pupils are currently exploring the concept of money in maths. Pupils developed their ability to calculate change when playing "shop" with real money. Pupils enjoyed playing maths games with their coins. We certainly have some future accountants in our midst!
The Diary of Anne Frank.
Pupils in 2nd class thoroughly enjoyed their recent studies based on the Diary of Anne Frank. Pupils were truly fascinated by the story and asked very insightful questions. Pupils developed their literacy skills when writing a diary entry from Anne's perspective. We read that Anne knew that the seasons were changing by studying a tree from her attic window. Pupils used this fact as inspiration for their art activity.
Our beautiful new church
2nd class pupils really enjoyed their first visit to our new church. We visited the crib and said some prayers. We can't wait to make our First Communion in our beautiful new church.
Miss.O'Shea X 2!
Having completed a project based on Abu Dhabi, pupils had the opportunity to interview Miss.O'Shea's sister Emer in school. Emer is currently teaching in Abu Dhabi. Pupils asked Emer questions about the climate and customs in Abu Dhabi.
Trip to the Post Office
Following lessons and discussions based on homelessness in Ireland, 2nd class pupils wrote very special letters to Santa Clause. Pupils generously offered to shared their presents with less fortunate children this Christmas. We also reminded Santa to look extra hard to find homeless children around the world. We really enjoyed visiting the post office to post our letters.
Comhrá beirte
Bhí an-craic sa rang a dó. Pupils participated in a comhrá beirte based on recent Gaeilge lessons. We really enjoyed the opportunity to mix up both classes and chat as Gaeilge with our friends. Bhí an spórt againn!
Advent.
Pupils in 2nd class are busy celebrating Advent, as we prepare for Christmas. We made Advent wreaths in art and we made night light holders using clay. We will light our candles on Christmas Day and say a special prayer. Fr.Tom visited 2nd class and was really impressed with our Sacred Space.
Science Week!
We really enjoyed Science Week in 2nd class. We concluded celebrating National Science Week by having a balloon party in class. We carried out a science experiment using a balloon, yeast, sugar and warm water. We were fascinated watching the balloon inflate. We had great fun learning about static electricity even if our hair was a little messy afterwards!!
Happy Halloween!
Rang a dó participated in our "Spooky Stroll to School". Pupils dressed up in their Halloween costumes and enjoyed playing traditional Halloween games.
Rugby World Cup
2nd class pupils really enjoyed learning interesting facts about the history of the Rugby World Cup. We even dressed up for a "Green Day" to celebrate the teams recent success!
Maths week 2015!
To celebrate Maths Week 2015 pupils participated in several mathematical games, completed symmetrical art and completed a maths trail in our school environment. We had great fun!
Healthy eating science experiment!
To further our learning about healthy eating, we carried out a science experiment. We tested a variety of foods for the presence of fat. We noted that fat turned brown paper translucent. We were surprised to learn how much fat is contained in foods such as butter and cheese. It was a very educational experience.

Healthy eating in Rang a dó!
As part of the SPHE curriculum, 2nd class are placing a particular emphasis on healthy eating until the midterm break. All pupils are making a special effort to ensure that they are eating a healthy lunch in school. Pupils had an opportunity to taste a variety of healthy foods in school this week. The healthy foods included hummus, nuts, dried fruits and wholemeal food. The boys and girls really enjoyed these new tastes and flavours…they were delicious!
2nd class parents are in for a treat!
Following a series of lessons based on procedural writing, 2nd class pupils visited our school kitchen with their recipe booklets. The boys and girls really enjoyed cooking and tasting tea, toast and scrambled eggs. Pupils intend to prepare breakfast in bed for someone special, with the help of an adult in the coming weeks.
Time to explore in rang a dó!
2nd class pupils recently had the opportunity to explore our school environment. We searched for natural and man made materials. We also found some mini beasts. It was great fun!
