Science Week
First Class were treated to a visit to the Star Dome- a portable planetarium in the Halla for Science Week. We also took part in a number of Science experiments in our classrooms. We had to design and make a boat from marla that would float. We worked together to design boats of different shapes and sizes in the hopes that some of our designs would stay afloat! Some floated while others didn't but we still had a good time experimenting and working together. We tested the strength of our boats by adding cubes to them. Our second experiment was a tasty one! We learned about how heat can change a solid to a liquid (or somewhere in between) by placing a small square of chocolate in the palm of our hands. After a few minutes and listening to a fun poem about chocolate we observed the results. As predicted, most of the chocolate had melted due to the heat of our hands. Melted or not we all agreed it still tasted delicious!
Maths Trail
First Class had great fun doing a Maths Trail for Maths Week. They were busy using their Maths skills - counting, measuring and finding shapes in their classroom, school building and out on yard.
A Visit to the County Library and Hall
First Class had a very exciting trip on Friday to the County Library where author and illustrator Derek Mulveen talked to them about how he became an author/illustrator and read them one of his books Oisín the Brave- Robot Island. He was very entertaining and more than happy to answer all their questions! After a spot of lunch they were then treated to a trip up to the seventeenth floor of the County Hall where they were able to marvel at the spectacular views from the large glass windows. They finished off their trip by visiting the new Council Chambers where they were given a guided tour and were delighted to sit on the councillors chairs and test their microphones to ask and answer questions. They returned to school on the Double Decker Bus very happy after their exciting day out.
