1916
1916
Like all schools in Ireland, Cloghroe is busily preparing for a celebration of Ireland’s 100 years of Independence. Included in our programme celebrating Irish culture are Irish Dancing, Amhránaiocht and our Traditional Music Group. There will also be a performance of a play, written and directed by the 6th Class teachers, on the events of 1916. Parents and grandparents are invited to see this on Monday night 14th March at 7pm.
We will also do a step back in time “Clothes of the 1916 era” on Tuesday 15th March in which both pupils and staff will be invited to use their creative ideas and wear the clothes/fashion of the era. Prizes will be given for the most creative costumes.
Meanwhile within many of our school’s classrooms, pupils and teachers are busily studying the events of 1916. 5th and 6th classes have read “The Guns of Easter”, a children’s historical novel based on that era. History textbooks, specially produced as a commemoration to 1916 are also being worked through, by several classes.
Events for Seachtain na Gaeilge will run in conjunction with the commemoration of the 1916 Rising including Gaeilgoir na Seachtaine, “Green Day”, the raising of the Irish Flag, a special school assembly and other events within the classrooms.
It is fitting that both Seachtain na Gaeilge and the 1916 Commemoration occur at the same time, given that the Gaelic League, GAA and many other organisations were set up to promote the revival of our Irish language, songs, dance and games, parallel to the plan for rebellion and Irish independence.
